Additional Information
  • Classes 9-66 and 12-66 were the first and second OCS classes at Fort Knox since the Korean Conflict. Class 14-66 was the first all Armor commissioned class. Due to the slow pace for OCS acceptance, the first eight classes were not activated, nor were Classes 10, 11, and 13-66.
  • During Fiscal Year 1966, OCS at Fort Knox was branch immaterial.
  • Class 9-66 graduates were able to choose one of the four following branches for commissioning: AR = Armor, OD = Ordnance, QM = Quartermaster Corps, TC = Transportation Corps,
  • Beginning in Fiscal Year 1967, OCS at Fort Knox was designated as Armor OCS with all graduates to commissioned as second lieutenants of Armor with the exception of one man in Class 2-68.
  • Classes 15-66, 17-66, 20-66, and 24-66 completed the thirteen weeks of Phase I of OCS at Fort Knox and were then sent to Fort Eustis, Virginia, for Phase II of Transportation Corps OCS.
  • Classes 16-66, 21-66, and 26-66 completed the thirteen weeks of Phase I of OCS at Fort Knox and were then sent to Fort Lee, Virginia, for Phase II of Quartermaster Corps OCS. 
  • Classes 12-66, 19-66, 23-66, and 27-66 completed the thirteen weeks of Phase I of OCS at Fort Knox and were then sent to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, for Phase II of Ordnance OCS.
  • An OCS class’s Company Designation was based on the barracks location where they were assigned.
  • Class 4-68 started OCS as Company A2, was relocated to and re-designated Company D2 as part of the closing of Armor OCS.
  • From 9 December 1965 to 23 February 1968, there were fifty-three Officer Candidate classes.  The following information is based on fifty-two class rosters that were on file at the Armor School Research Library at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and Fort Knox Letter Orders listing the names of those in Class 12-66.
  • Nine hundred twenty nine (929) individuals completed thirteen weeks of Phase I OCS training prior to being sent to either Ordnance branch Quartermaster Corps, or Transportation Corps schools for the ten weeks Phase II of OCS training.
  • Three thousand three hundred ninety-three (3,393) individuals completed twenty-three weeks of OCS training at Fort Knox and were commissioned as Second Lieutenants. 
  • 3,354 were commissioned in the Armor branch.
  • 22 were commissioned in the Transportation Corps.
  • 10 were commissioned in the Ordnance branch.
  • 7 were commissioned in the Quartermaster Corps.
  • Four thousand, three hundred twenty-two (4,322) individuals completed OCS training at Fort Knox.
  • One hundred thirteen (113) of the 4,322 died or were killed in Vietnam, or later died from wounds sustained in a combat zone in Vietnam.  One died in the Beirut Bombing in 1983.
  • Calendar year 1968 was the year of the greatest number of deaths.
  • Three graduates were the recipients of the Medal of Honor.
  • Ten graduates achieved the rank of general officer.
